Regina Food Bank Considering “Food Distribution Hub”

The Regina Food Bank is eyeing a former government liquor store location as a good spot for a downtown community food hub.

The food bank’s current location near the north end of Winnipeg street is great for a warehouse, but its far removed from most of their clients.  The Regina Food Bank’s board is looking to work with the City of Regina to lease the closed SLGA location at Broad and 12th.  It has been closed, and empty for a number of years.  The location would be more like a grocery store, providing some dignity to the 12,000 people it helps every month.  It will not replace the current location, but it will be come the primary site for distribution.

The food bank is asking the City of Regina for $200,000 and to lease the property behind the building for a dollar per year.  The entire project will cost 3.2 million dollars.

The food bank’s board of directors will vote on this early in the new year.
