Alberta Premier believes criticism over the sovereignty act is due to “awkward wording”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she is taking a “fair-minded” approach as her government crafts changes to her proposed sovereignty act.

The amendments to be tabled and debated in the legislature this week seek to rein in a contentious part of the bill that gives her cabinet unfettered power to rewrite laws behind closed doors without approval by the assembly.

Smith said on a radio show Saturday that is not her intention, adding her government wants to make that point clear in law.

She says “You never get things 100 per cent right all the time,” and believes criticism of the bill stems from confusion caused by some “awkward wording.”
