Weyburn, Estevan provided with Municipal Police Grants

The Saskatchewan government is providing more than one-million dollars to support policing initiatives in Estevan and Weyburn in the latest rollouts of the municipal police grants program.

Weyburn is to get $405,000 to fund two existing police positions in the community, and one new position in traffic services.

“”This investment will not only strengthen the Weyburn community, but also provide the service with critical resources,” said Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA and Minister of Education Dustin Duncan in a media release.
SGI is providing $180,000 for the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS)  initiative, while the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety is providing the remainder under the Municipal Police Grants program in 2022-23.

“This investment helps us achieve our commitment to a safe community for all and supports our fiscal responsibility to Weyburn residents,” said Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy in the release.

Estevan is to get $629,000 to fund four existing policing positions and support the police and crisis team, which responds to mental health crisis in the community.

SGI is providing $180,000 for the position with CTSS while the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety is once again providing the remainder under the Municipal Police Grants program in 2022-23.

“This funding will help our police service deliver important initiatives as they work diligently to keep our community safe,” said Estevan MLA Lori Carr, who is also SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister.

“This partnership helps us work together to provide the best service for the community in the fight against crime, along with continued support for those in mental health crisis,” said Estevan police Chief Richard Lowen.

Estevan Mayor Roy Ludwig says it allows for better policing in various areas that make a positive difference in the community.
