As bad of a week as Sunwing Airlines is having, for most of its passengers its worse.
A series of weather cancellations and delays has thrown the destination carrier’s schedule into chaos stranding thousands of tourists in places like Mexico and Cuba.
In Varadero, Cuba there are some 24 people from Regina who were due to fly home to the Queen City December 27th. That flight was cancelled, and so was one scheduled for the next day.
Fortunately these people at this particular resort in Veradero are being allowed to stay in their rooms, while they wait for Sunwing to pick them up.
The people 620CKRM spoke with at a resort in Varadero say they just want to come home. Earlier today buses did arrive to take some tourists from Quebec to a waiting plane to get them home, but there has been not one word from Sunwing about the passengers from Regina, and no clear communication with them about when they will be able to head home.
620CKRM reached out to Sunwing for comment, but so far there has been no response.
Sunwing announced yesterday it is suspending service to both Regina and Saskatoon until February 3rd 2023. The air carrier says this will help stabilize its schedule.
Premier Scott Moe issued the following statement:
“This is a very irresponsible decision by Sunwing for everyone who has booked a vacation, particularly those who are currently at their destination and are uncertain how and when they will get home. While airlines and air travel are regulated by the federal government, Saskatchewan’s Transportation Minister Jeremy Cockrill has been in contact with Sunwing and with federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra asking for a detailed plan of how and when passengers who travelled from Saskatchewan will get back, which is the immediate priority. In the days ahead, we expect Sunwing to appropriately compensate everyone who did not receive the service they purchased from Sunwing.”
There are no flights from Sunwing on the arrival or departure boards at airports in Regina and Saskatoon for the foreseeable future.
