The death of an adult man in Regina on December 30th is being investigated by Regina police and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service.

At about 3:44 a.m. on Dec. 30, police were sent to a residence on the 2200 block of Smith Street to apprehend an unwanted guest and an individual wanted on warrants.

Police couldn’t summon anyone to the door when they arrived. Police then went to the 2200 block of 14th Avenue nearby where they found a man with a weapon.

Preliminary evidence indicates the weapon was discharged and the male fell to the floor. Two police officers were there, police said, but neither had any physical contact with the suspect and they did not discharge their firearms.

Officers then requested EMS and other units, and EMS confirmed that the man was deceased. The man was determined to be the same man who had been an unwanted guest in the earlier call.

Police are not releasing the name of the man who died. Because the intention was to arrest the man, they will be treating it as an in-custody death and have advised Saskatchewan Justice.

Elizabeth Popowich, manager of public information and Strategic Information for the Regina Police Service, indicated they are not treating the death as a homicide.
