New study highlights growing food insecurity in Canada

A new study out this month says reliance on food banks and other charities could increase by 60 percent this year.

More than 1300 Canadian food charity groups were surveyed at the end of last year by Second Harvest,Canada’s largest food rescue organization.

CEO Lori Nikkel says we might be in a new year, but there’s no resolution in sight for the growing food insecurity problem in this country.

Also according to the report, non-profits across Canada anticipated a budget shortfall of 94 million dollars to meet the growing demand this year.

That averages around 70 thousand dollars per organization.

An estimated one in seven Canadians are now classified as food insecure and require assistance to make ends meet.
