Luca Veeman named Team Sask flag bearer for opening ceremonies of 2023 Canada Winter Games

Team Saskatchewan has announced speed skater, Luca Veeman of Saskatoon will be the province’s flag bearer for the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.

Opening ceremonies of the games will take place on Saturday, February 18 in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Veeman has been competing in speed skating since he was six. He trains with the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club.

This past October, Veeman was accepted to the National Training Centre at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. He has also recently made the switch from short track to focus on long track speed skating.

Last year, the Saskatoon product qualified for the Canadian National Junior Team in long track speed skating, but due to pandemic reasons, Canada did not send any skaters to Poland. He is currently ranked in the top three in Canada for junior speed skaters.

At the Canadian Junior Speed Skating Championships he won bronze in the 1500m and silver in the 5000m, qualifying him once again to race for the Canadian Junior National Team in Germany.

This winter will not be the first time Veeman has competed as a member of Team Sask. In the summer, he competed in the 2022 Canada Summer Games as a cyclist athlete.

The 2023 Canada Winter Games is from February 18-March 5 throughout the province of Prince Edward Island.
