New face of the franchise. Riders agree to terms with QB Trevor Harris

The winds of change have brought a new quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they have signed quarterback Trevor Harris.

The Riders officially Harris to a contract on Tuesday with the opening of free agency in the Canadian Football League.

Harris joins the Riders after spending the last two seasons in Montreal. He took over as the team’s starter early in the 2022 season from Vernon Adams Jr. and ended the season with 4,157 passing yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.

Experience is something Harris will bring with him to Saskatchewan. The 36-year-old has spent eleven seasons in the CFL. He started out in Toronto before moving on to Ottawa and Edmonton.

Harris appeared as a guest on the SportsCage earlier this month and believes he can play beyond his years.

“I hope people can stop looking at the number next to my age and let my play do the talking.”

Riders Head Coach Craig Dickenson said earlier this month on the SportsCage that Harris was a quarterback who possessed the traits needed for the position. “A solid veteran quarterback who has been there and done that, knows what it takes to be successful, is intelligent, is tough, appears to be a charismatic leader and physically he looks like he just as good now as he has ever been.”

Earlier this off-season, Harris was hopeful that he could return to Montreal for the 2023 season as he gave praise to the team’s general manager, Danny Maciocia and new head coach Jason Maas.

“I love those guys so much, I have so much respect for them.”

The best season for Harris was back in 2018 with Ottawa. He had 5,116 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. He also led the REDBLACKS to the Grey Cup that season where they were defeated by the Calgary Stampeders.

Harris is set to replace Cody Fajardo as the Roughriders starting quarterback. Fajardo, like most of the Riders struggled in 2022. After leading the Roughriders to a pair of appearances in the Western Final, Saskatchewan did not make the playoffs last season in a year where they were the hosts of the Grey Cup.
