Over $78,000 in seat belt tickets issued in January

SGI’s January traffic Safety Spotlight explained why there are a million reasons people should buckle while in a vehicle.

Results from the January Traffic Safety Spotlight added another 78,225 reasons.

Last month, the police issued 447 tickets for improperly restrained drivers or passengers.

There were 380 tickets to drivers not wearing a seatbelt, over 47 tickets to passengers not wearing a seatbelt, and over 20 tickets to drivers for children not restrained in the correct booster or car seat.

Totaling roughly 447 tickets costing $175 each.

The total cost for all those tickets equals $78,225.

Seatbelt tickets also come with three demerit points, which can lead to additional financial penalties or loss of insurance discounts.

SGI states that the safety of wearing a seatbelt can not be underestimated as it can help you escape serious injury or death in the event of a collision.

Approximately 5 per cent of drivers who don’t wear their seatbelts equals up to one-third of drivers who have lost their lives in vehicle collisions.

In 2021, 20 drivers or passengers were killed while not wearing a seatbelt.
