Blizzard Warning ended – Bypass and Highway 1 east and west closed

The snow continues to fall in the Queen City but we are at the tail end of the blizzard.

Environment and Climate Change Canada still has ended the blizzard warnin for Regina. However, a blowing snow advisory is now in effect – predicting the snowfall and gusty winds to continue through this afternoon.

However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

“We are slowly going to see things improve. Farther south, things will hang on a little bit longer. We are expecting the blizzard conditions to hang on in Estevan until this afternoon but through the day today we’ll see conditions improving throughout all of southern Saskatchewan,” says Shannon Moodie, Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

From the snowfall last night and what’ll continue to fall throughout today, it’s predicted to total up to 15-25 cm but the city is through the worst of it.

“The bulk of it was forecasted to fall last night. Today we’re looking at just a couple of centimeters more. The snow has already started to taper off in the southwestern part of the province. For Regina, we’re forecasting another five centimeters,” says Moodie.

The winds are currently gusting anywhere from 40 to 70 km per hour but the winds are also expected to die down in the afternoon.

Currently, on the Highway Hotline, the Regina Bypass and Highway 1 east of the city to Balgonie and west towards Moose Jaw are closed due to dangerous driving conditions.

All other surrounding highways are experiencing poor visibility or are not recommended for travel.

If you are traveling this morning, be sure to have a winter safety kit packed in your car along with blankets, give yourself extra time, and check the Highway Hotline before leaving to prepare yourself.
