Erica Beaudin has been elected the new Chief of the Cowessess First Nation.
The former Executive Director of the Regina Treaty/Status Indian Services received 43 per cent of the votes, defeating three other candidates.
Beaudin replaces outgoing Chief Cadmus Delorme, who has previously served two terms as a leader and declined not to seek a third term.
“This is an incredible day, and I am still absorbing and processing all what it means,” Beaudin said in a Facebook post. “What I do know is that this will be the most important endeavour I have embarked on.”
“As your Chief, I am excited to be a part of the team you, the membership chose,” she continued. “I know that we will come together with unity and passion to serve and be the best helpers we can be. We can’t do it alone, and the exciting part will be our people will guide and direct us as it should be.”
Before running for chief, Beaudin worked as an advocate in Regina for more than two decades.
She is set to assume the position of chief in her home first nation immediately.
