City crews working to repair potholes as construction season begins

With Regina experiencing its second and hopefully last spring melt, potholes have again appeared across Regina roads.

Colin Midgley, the manager of roadway maintenance operations with the City of Regina, said crews are already busy using temporary patches.

“Typically, our main pothole permanent patch season is from May until pretty much the end of October.”

Midgley said that crews would focus on locations considered high priority.

“We focus on locations that are high priority, such as Ring Road. Those things are determined by traffic volume, speed, and things like that, where there is potential for bigger hazards,” he said. “We try to address those first, and then we kind of work through our way through the rest of the city systematically to address all of the rest of the potholes.”

Midgley said while crews do their best to repair as many potholes as possible, residents can help the City identify new or worsening ones.

“You can either make a service request online at Regina.ca/servicerequest or call our service Regina line at 1-306-777-7000, and you can report those locations to us and help us to those a little faster.”

He noted that the recent spring storm has made the roads worse.

“Potholes usually form when water gets into the road’s surface, and as water infiltrates and we get freeze, thaw, cycles, just like we had last week with the storm, it definitely contributes to further or increased damage,” he said. “Last week didn’t help us.”

While crews repair potholes, the City asks residents to warry and slow down at the site of potholes, City signage, and crews working.

According to SGI, they have seen 34 claims about ‘roadbed collisions’ in Regina, which can often be associated with potholes.
