Portland selects female goalie Stickney in 2023 WHL Prospects Draft

The Portland Winterhawks made a historic selection during Thursday’s WHL Prospects Draft.

In the tenth round, with the 215th selection the Winterhawks picked female goalie Morgan Stickney.

The selection marked the first time a female American has been drafted in the WHL Prospects Draft.

Stickney held a 23-4-3 record across 33 games with a sterling .928 save percentage and 1.52 goals-against average last season with the Shattuck St. Mary’s 16U women’s program.

Before moving to Minnesota to play for Shattuck St. Mary’s, Stickney previously played for the Los Angeles Jr. Kings AAA organization. She played on the boys 10U, 11U, 12U and 13U teams and helped the Jr. Kings rank top five nationally all four years she played, including a #1 ranking during the 2020-21 season.

Last year, the Vancouver Giants selected 2007-born defenseman Chloe Primerano in the 13th round, #268 overall, of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.
