Roughriders will try to extend their home-opening success at Mosaic Stadium on Friday

 

Another season of Roughriders football at Mosaic Stadium begins on Friday when the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the team’s home opener.

Since opening their new facility in 2017, the Roughriders have been successful in their home openers with a 4-1 record.

The lone loss so far came at the hands of the Blue Bombers in the first ever matchup inside of Mosaic Stadium.

Here is a look back at the Roughriders history of home openers in their new home.

 

2017 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 43 Saskatchewan Roughriders 40 2OT

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers spoiled the party at Mosaic Stadium in the opening regular season game of the brand new facility in Regina, as the Blue Bombers won a Canada Day thriller. Saskatchewan were unable to complete the comeback after tying the game with a pair of touchdowns in the final ten minutes in regulation.

Blue Bombers QB Matt Nichols had four passing touchdowns with 331 passing yards. Riders QB Kevin Glenn had four passing touchdowns of his own.

Former Rider receiver Weston Dressler had 124 receiving yards with a pair of touchdown receptions for Winnipeg. Current Blue Bomber, Nic Demski had 82 receiving yards for Saskatchewan.

Justin Medlock kicked a 21-yard field goal to win the game in double overtime.

 

2018 Saskatchewan Roughriders 27 Toronto Argonauts 19

Nic Marshall’s 66-yard interception return for a touchdown was a deciding factor as the Saskatchewan Roughriders opened up the 2018 season with a win over the Boatmen.

Zac Callaros had 203 yards passing with a touchdown for the Roughriders. Ricky Ray had 233 passing yards with the lone interception that was picked off by Marshall.

Current Riders receivers coach, Naaman Roosevelt had a touchdown reception.

Brett Lauther had five goals in the win.

 

2019 Saskatchewan Roughriders 32 Toronto Argonauts 7 

It was another Canada Day matchup for the first contest at Mosaic Stadium, this time the Roughriders were able to walk away victorious against the Argonauts.

Cody Fajardo had 430 passing yards with a pair of touchdowns. Kyran Moore and Shaq Evans both went over the 100-receiving-yard mark with “Swerve” recording 127 yards and a touchdown, and Evans recording 112 yards.

Saskatchewan stormed out of the gate, scoring 26 points in the opening half.

Current Roughrider, Derel Walker had a 56-yard reception for the Argonauts.

 

2021 Saskatchewan Roughriders 33 BC Lions 29 

Following the cancellation of the 2020 season due to COVID pandemic, the 2021 season began in August as the Roughriders opened up their abbreviated campaign with a divisional opponent in the Lions.

It was a tale of two halves from the Roughriders offence, opening up with 32 points in the first two quarters before posting a single point in the second half.

Brayden Lenius had a touchdown reception for Saskatchewan.

BC had both Michael Reilly and Nathan Rourke behind centre, Reilly ended with 203 passing yards and a touchdown while Rourke had 194 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

 

2022 Saskatchewan Roughriders 30  Hamilton Tiger-Cats 13

Nic Marshall had another interception for the Roughriders home-opening win, as Saskatchewan earned a win over Hamilton.

Defensively the green and white were a force as the Roughriders collected eights sacks. Pete Robertson had two of those sacks.

Derrick Moncrief also had an interception in his return to Saskatchewan.

 

 

On Friday, the Roughriders are hoping to add another win to their collection of home-opening wins when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Countdown to Kickoff begins at 4:00 with the opening kickoff at 7:00.
