He didn’t walk away with a victory on Friday night, but Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris made a strong first impression on Rider Nation at Mosaic Stadium.
Despite being listed as a game-time decision with a hip injury after being limited in practice all week, Harris would throw for over 400 yards with three touchdowns in Saskatchewan’s 45-27 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Without some of his top targets like Kian Schaffer-Baker, Brayden Lenius Derel Walker, the Roughriders quarterback relied on Tevin Jones and Shawn Bane Jr. to rack up over 100 yards receiving and Samuel Emilus collecting his first three CFL touchdowns in the team’s home opener.
It’s only two games into the season, but besides his health status, the starting quarterback position shouldn’t be the main concern for the Roughrider fanbase with the 37-year-old fully entrenched in the role.
On Sunday, Harris like many other dads, will get a chance to celebrate with it being Father’s Day. Last month, along with his wife Kalie became the parents of three boys with the arrival of their third son Tripp.
Father’s Day is something that the quarterback enjoys.
“To me Father’s Day is a day that I get to celebrate my kids and think how amazing it is to be a father and also recognize my own, one of the best to ever do it, Tom Harris.”
Like a quarterback, Harris has accumulated some experience as a father and believes attention is a big part of it.
“New dads, just make sure you understand that life is more about your kids now than yourself and that was the biggest thing for me having a kid, I always tell people, you’re not ready to have a kid unless you’re ready to put someone’s needs before you.”
As the starting quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Harris dedicates all of his time to the task while at Mosaic Stadium. However, when he returns home, he prioritizes his responsibility as a dad.
“Being fully present with someone for two hours is much better than 40 to 50 percent for six hours with them, yeah when I get home, I’m dad, I just think that I owe that to them.”
Harris and the rest of the Roughriders will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Calgary and meet the Stampeders in a matchup between a pair of clubs with 1-1 records.
Countdown to Kickoff begins at 2:00, with the opening kickoff at 5:00 on 620 CKRM.
