Charges laid in connection to 2021 pedestrian death deemed homicide

The Regina Police Service says they have laid charges concerning a July 2021 death investigation.

On Saturday, July 24th, 2021, police were dispatched to the east alley of the 800 block of Queen Street for a report of an injured male. EMS also attended to the location and pronounced 53-year-old Lionel Gary Schaeffer dead.

After an investigation by the RPS’s Major Crimes Unit, the death was determined to be a homicide.

As a result of the investigation, an 18-year-old was arrested and charged with manslaughter and failure to stop after an accident that resulted in death.

The accused was a youth at the time of the offence, so he will not be undefended under the Youth Criminal Justice Act provisions.

The 18-year-old made his first court appearance in Provincial Youth Court on Monday.
