The Saskatchewan Roughriders formed an everlasting championship bond in 2013.
That was evident on Thursday when the Grey Cup Champion squad reunited in Regina as they were honoured with an induction into the Plaza of Honour.
Among the members the team on include quarterback Darian Durant and head coach Corey Chamblin.
Kory Sheets, Tyron Brackenridge, Terrell Maze, Tristan Jackson and Chris Milo spoke to the media before the induction ceremony.
Entering As One
The Saskatchewan Roughriders won their fourth Grey Cup on November 24, 2013, defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 45-23.
Sheets earned an MVP award with a Grey Cup record 197 rushing yards and two touchdowns, igniting a memorable night throughout Saskatchewan.
Even with the accolades he achieved and the plays the running back created at “old” Mosaic Stadium on that day, the memory of the Grey Cup that sticks out for Sheets was the team ignoring the player introductions and entering the field united as one.
“Standing in that tunnel, before we all ran out, it was like, we’re all going to war, we got to play, we got to execute, and we went out and did it, together.”
He recalled that defensive end Ricky Foley first mentioned the idea inside the locker room before the game.
Brackenridge and Maze both remembered the audible for the entrance.
“We agreed as a team, you know what, we’re going to storm the field, like we do, we’re all going to come out together.” said Brackenridge
Maze agreed and knew the united front would be too much for the Tiger-Cats.
Throughout the lead up to the celebration of the 2013 team, all of the players have spoken about the close-knit nature of the group.
Milo said the entire team was focused and shared the vision of Grey Cup aspirations.
“We all bought in, no one complained,” said the former kicker, “there was no cliques, everybody was hanging out with everyone.”
Time did not change anything, according to Milo.
“Even last night (Wednesday) we were all together, it was like the same, like we were together the day before.”
Along with the induction into the Plaza of Honour, members of the 2013 Grey Cup team will take part in autograph signings on Friday at the Roughriders store at the stadium and once again in the Party in the Park before Saturday’s game.
At half-time, the team will receive acknowledgement through a video tribute.
Besides the 2013 team, Wendy Kelly entered the Plaza of Honour as apart of the class of 2023. Inducted posthumously, Kelly became the first female in history to serve on the Roughriders’ board, from 1993 to 1995.
