Tis the season for packages of all sorts to be delivered. Before the guy in the “red suit” makes his trip around the world, on line shopping means more and more packages being left on doorsteps, and that is an invitation to thieves.
The Saskatchewan RCMP don’t want to see any victims of so called “porch pirates”.
Police have several suggestions to avoid being a victim.
Have the package delivered when you are at home. Have the package sent to a trusted neighbour, or your workplace. Ask the delivery person to place the package somewhere out of sight.
Other tips include:
- Redirect your package to a nearby pick-up location;
- Request a signature for delivery or for the package to be placed out of sight; and
- Consider installing exterior security cameras to monitor your doorstep remotely and capture any suspicious activity.
The RCMP also have an on line link to report crime.
A reminder that you can report thefts to Saskatchewan RCMP through Online Crime Reporting, available at http://report.rcmp.ca. You can use this always-available, simple option if:
- There are no witnesses or suspects;
- Item(s) lost or stolen are worth less than $5,000; and
- There are no items involving personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals.
