The chances were there for the Regina Pats on Friday night, but unfortunately the goals weren’t, as they were shutout by the Swift Current Broncos 3-0.
Reid Dyck made 27 saves in the win for Swift Current, his second straight shutout win.
Pats Ewan Huet was busy making 36 saves.
After a scoreless first period, the Broncos first goal came from the stick Zach Turner, with a shot from the point that beat Huet that gave Swift Current the lead just past the halfway mark in the second period.
In the third period, the Broncos put the game away with a pair of goals in a 29 second span. Clarke Caswell provided the insurance marker with a shot that beat a heavily screened Huet. Moments later, Ty Coupland was sprung on a breakaway, and slid the puck past Huet for the final blow of the night.
Head coach Brad Herauf said his team couldn’t finish the chances they created on Friday.
“We generated a lot of scoring opportunities and he (Dyck) was obviously there every time to make a save on us.”
Regina fell a little bit further in the playoff race after the Calgary Hitmen picked up a wild 6-5 overtime win over the Edmonton Oil Kings. With the win, Calgary leaped over Prince Albert for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as the Raiders were defeated by the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Pats now trail the Hitmen by seven points for the final playoff spot.
While Calgary and Prince Albert are both in action on Saturday night, Regina has the night off. They will be back at the Brandt Centre on Sunday against the Red Deer Rebels.
