Those in White City wanting to help their community and surrounding area will get a chance to voice their thoughts next week. Members of area Lions Clubs and and Lions administration will be canvassing the towns of White City and Emerald Park to see if there is interest in starting a new club.
“Locally, you feel great when you get out to go help your community grow and expand and help with the different services the community needs,” explained Alvin Matechuk, past District Governor of the Lions.
Matechuck says there are currently no service clubs in the White City/Emerald Park community and feels there is a need for a Lions Club to help serve the residents of the area with various projects. Matechuk is very enthusiastic about being a Lions member and says there are so many advantages to the club.
“In the past couple of years I’ve met so many people around North America,” he exclaimed. “We are not restricted to just the community and we will take anybody.”
Matechuck noted that Lions International is the biggest the biggest non profit organization in the world. Recent stats say there are over 49,000 local clubs worldwide with over 1.4 million members in 200 countries. In addition to fundraising for community projects, Lions Clubs are heavily involved in helping those who are visually impaired. They partner with doctors and specialists to help provide support and services to those who are blind and to help in the prevention of vision loss by supporting those needing cataract surgeries and by supplying eye glasses.
Members of the Lions will be out in full force on Feb 14th, 15th, and 16th in White City and Emerald Park to inform people of their desire to start a club and how they can be part of the initial steps to get it off the ground. At least 20 members will be needed to form a club.
For those who want to know more about the club and how they can be part of the open house, call Alvin Matechuk at 306-536-3850.
