The 2024 Regina Red Sox season will get underway at Currie Field on Saturday, May 25th when the Red Sox host the new Saskatoon Berries ball team at 7:05pm. One of the best dinner’s you can take in is the annual Regina Red Sox Sports Dinner at the Turvey Centre on April 20th. This year’s guest speaker is Blue Jays legend Ernie Whitt.
He was on the original 1977 Blue Jays team,” explained Red Sox President Gary Brotzel. “Ernie was the catcher in that first Toronto game and, of course, he’s been the long time manager of the Canadian National Team.”
Whitt was first selected by the Boston Red Sox in 1976 and played one season with them before being drafted by the new Toronto Blue Jays in 1977. Whitt played for the Jays for one season before being sent down to the Syracuse Chiefs. He’d return to the Blue Jays in 1980 as the catcher for the team, staying with them until 1989. In 1990 Whitt went to the Atlanta Braves before retiring in 1991 as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. in 2004, Whitt took over as manager of the Canadian National Baseball Team.
“I’d say it’s probably the most relaxed (dinner) and people have just a great time at our dinner,” stated Brotzel.
The evening will feature live and silent auctions, updates on team operations, and a huge buffet meal provided by the Turvey Centre. All money raised during the evening goes towards the Regina Red Sox baseball team.
“Ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, and all the usual good food you get at the Turvey Centre,” Brotzel noted.
