Timing is Everything

“If you see someone today that needs your help, help them. In life you get what you give. Even if it is a smile, look people in the eyes, connect, and show them some love.”

This little inspirational note was in a basket in a funky little shop on the edge of Chinatown in Victoria, B.C.. It was the last day of our family trip to the Island. A little more time to explore shops and enjoy the whole West Coast chill. On the way out of the shop, I picked one. This one. I think it is our responsibility to be kind, sometimes it can be tough.

That was Sunday, let’s jump to Tuesday. My sister and I had driven from Regina to Calgary and we were now on our way home after coming back to Alberta on Monday evening, from B.C.. A late start from Alberta and some shopping along the way, listening to the Oilers playoff game and the Moose Jaw Warriors’ WHL Championship game was a good wind-down from being away. A quick pitstop in Swift Current for coffee was required for stretching and refresh. Bathroom and coffee!! My sister came out of the washroom talking on the phone. I thought perhaps it was our other sister whom we were holidaying with, wanting to talk about the hockey game. Who does that on a holiday!? The phone was not Lynette’s it was someone else’s and it was left in the Tim Horton’s washroom. Lynette had answered it, the owner lived in Mortlach and was THANKFUL that someone had answered it. AND of course, we will drop it off we are headed that way! Why wouldn’t we!

And that brings me back to the opening quote. “If you see someone today that needs your help, help them.” People are in such a hurry, there is self-centeredness that takes over from patience and kindness. It took 5 minutes to stop and hand off the phone. And with the conversations we had, each ended with the strangers saying, “thank you, how can we repay you, safe travels”.

When someone says “safe travels” or a parent delays you by wanting to check your oil, remember those days, it is really means they love you.
