Two city councillors to bring forward motion to rename Dewdney Avenue

At today’s Regina City Council meeting, a motion will be submitted to rename Dewdney Avenue.

Dewdney Avenue, named after Edgar Dewdney, a historical figure linked to harmful policies towards Indigenous peoples, is under review for a name change due to a motion put forward for today’s meeting by Councillors Dan LeBlanc and Andrew Stevens.

The councillors say Dewdney was a historical figure directly responsible for development and administration of harmful practices, including the establishment and oversight of residential schools.

Previous council decisions have removed Dewdney’s name from other public spaces, including a pool. If the motion is accepted, city administration will consult stakeholders for a new name.

A petition nearly four years ago by the Buffalo People Arts Institute asked that Dewdney’s name be taken off of the street, as well as parks and the area pool.
