The Regina Humane Society and its Animal Protection Officers rescued 26 dogs from living in ‘unsuitable conditions.’

On the evening of May 15, a concerned public member alerted the Regina Humane Society (RHS) Animal Protection Services about multiple canines living in unsuitable conditions.

Upon investigation, in conjunction with the Regina Police Service, RHS Animal Protection Officers found 17 adult dogs and nine puppies living in crowded housing and covered in dirt, urine, and feces.

The dogs were of various mixed breeds and appeared to have been living in unsanitary conditions for an extended period due to the large build-up of excrement. Many of the dogs displayed signs of extreme fear and mental or physical injury.

A team of officers worked through the night to remove and transport the animals to the Animal Community Centre, where they were each examined by RHS veterinary staff.

The RHS announced that humane euthanasia was necessary for 10 of the dogs.

“This is an incredibly sad situation all round,” said Lisa Koch, RHS Executive Director. “These dogs were getting only the mere basics of some food and water, but their other needs such as socialization and a clean and healthy living environment were not being met.”

Since being taken into care, the dogs have been cleaned and groomed to relieve them of fur mats and feces that clung to their coat, and debris has been removed from the ears, nose, and eye areas. They are expected to recover and be able to fully find their forever homes.

As this is an open investigation, the RHS will not comment on any potential actions that may be taken.
