Saskatchewan residents are rolling this summer; heading out to the lake, going to festivals, working in the fields, taking in football and baseball games, swimming and fishing, we are busy. But you must remember that for every action there can be a consequence. With action brings accidents like being thrown from a horse or a jet ski, cutting your hand, being hit by a ball. And let’s not forget about surgeries that take place planned or an emergency, chances are blood will play a role. Any circumstance where blood is needed you hope that the blood supply would be adequate. During the summer months the donation numbers drop, so it is up to all of us to make a commitment to donate blood.

I used to be a blood donor many years ago. For whatever reason, my blood did not want to leave my body. Now, that might seem like a good thing. I joked, if I was in an accident, I might not bleed freely! Through my time making donations and supporting the Canadian Blood Services, I created friendships just by being part of the Red Deer Canadian Blood Services clinics. I continue to communicate with the people that worked there to this day. The station I worked with at that time, did remotes there and other “stunts” to get people to make the commitment to do the regular donations. I took much longer than the average time to make a donation, so they eventually said, “we love having you stop by, but it takes you too long so you get a pass”.

Don’t be a Gloria, try to give blood. The people that work at the Canadian Blood Services are terrific. You get refreshments after the donation. They look after you so you aren’t rushed out the door. Remember, if you feel pressured to give and you aren’t into it, it is okay to say no. But, I think you should try it .. even just once. At least take the time to find out what blood type you are.

CBS Regina’s Aaron Barlow, took time to chat about what is needed as far as donors. There are lots of openings to be filled and I know that Regina and surrounding areas will make a point to give the gift of life. Regina has a new location on south Albert Street. Download the app and make your appointments when you can. I have been at many celebrations where donors are honoured for their commitments and it is uplifting to hear why people do such charitable things.

Think of it this way; when you hear STARS flying across the sky, someone probably needs blood. If you hear an ambulance, likely someone will need blood. If you know someone in the hospital that is having surgery or dealing with cancer, they will need someone’s blood.

No money is required, just your time and knowing that you are making a difference in many lives.
