Summer forecast predicting above normal temps

The season may be short, but Saskatchewanians know how to pack the most fun into just a few warm months. Summer in our province means camping, weddings, musical festivals, and lake days, so what does the summer forecast look like?

Environment and Climate Change Canada has released their annual summer forecast and it’s predicting a warm summer once again. Unlike last year, this year has been wetter thanks to timely rains that blanketed many parts of drought-stricken Saskatchewan. According to Environment Canada, the majority of the country can expect above normal summer temperatures. This is particularly true from the Manitoba/Ontario border all the way to the maritime provinces. Residents in Ontario and Quebec can expect a hot, dry summer, while those can in Alberta can expect temperatures that are not quite as hot, but still above normal.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba can expect a toasty summer as well but, like Alberta, may not experience the heat that is expected to sit over Ontario and Quebec. Environment Canada says BC and the Yukon are the only places in the country expected to have a near normal summer.

Saskatchewan and Alberta have been stricken with drought over the past few summers and many have wondered if rain is going to arrive this summer. Spring rains have brought relief to many of these regions, but Environment Canada stopped short of issuing a precipitation outlook because it’s difficult to accurately predict rainfall amounts.

Environment Canada’s summer forecast doesn’t differ much from that of the Weather Network. Meteorologists with the Weather Network believe Alberta and most of southern Saskatchewan will have near normal precipitation.
