Gorging on mini donuts for a cause

The Queen City Ex is fast approaching and that means the annual mini-donut eating competition is back in support of the Regina Food Bank. For the past three years competitive eater Joey Chestnut has dominated against local eaters in support of food security for the Regina community.

“Last year he (Joey Chestnut) set a record with 304 mini donuts in eight minutes,” stated Evelyn Cerda of the Regina Food Bank.

This year, a team and relay format will be set up to compete against Chestnut with up to four people allowed on each team.

“This is for a great cause and we like to have fun with our fundraisers. REAL (Regina Exhibition Association Ltd) has been great at facilitating this event and people love it,” noted Cerda.

Each competitor is asked to raise a minimum of $1000 prior to the competition which equals nearly 3000 meals for those less fortunate. This year’s goal in the mini-donut eating contest is to raise enough money for 150,000 meals.

“We just wrapped up our numbers from last year and we added about 3,500 new clients last year, so the need continues to grow, and it’s great to have partners like REAL that help us fundraise and collect items for the food bank,” Cerda said.

In all, 19,974 children, youth, and adults used the food bank in Regina in 2023, which is 21.7% increase from 2022 according to the Regina Food Bank.

This year’s mini-donut eating contest will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at 3p.m. at the Original 16 Outdoor Stage in Confederation Park, west of Mosaic Stadium and hosted by Evan Baran of 104.9 The Wolf.
