Last Friday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders beat their prairie rivals, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 19-9.
On the latest episode of Double Talk with Darian Durant, he was honest when he talked about the last play of the game where Bomber’s Adam Bighill hit Riders’ QB Shea Patterson after he threw the ball away.
“You know what,” Durant said to host Barney Shynkaruk on Monday’s edition of the SportsCage. “A lot of people are upset at Adam Bighill, and they think that it was a dirty bush League play on his behalf, but I’m actually with him on this. He played to the end of the whistle; that’s what he’s { Adam Bighill} taught to do.”
Durant’s criticism stems from his fear for Patterson because he felt that he could have risked injury.
“You know, in Shea Patterson’s case, he should have protected himself more…. so he could avoid that type of hit,” explained Durant.
Durant complemented one aspect of Patterson’s game, his ability to rush with the football, but this did not surprise him due to Shea’s teachings from a previous coach.
“With Shea learning from Jim Harbaugh and having that dimension in his game,” described Durant. “You can see it on full display, so, you know I’m not surprised that he uses his legs.”
Shea Patterson’s full stat line for the game against the Bombers: he threw 261 yards, rushed for 35 yards on four carries, and threw one touchdown.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ next game will be against the Montreal Alouettes, who currently lead the East division with five wins and one loss.
Hypothetically, Durant was given the power to handle the Riders’ practices before their upcoming game, and he stressed the importance of recovery.
“I think first and foremost, it’s about recovery, right? That Winnipeg game was a very physical game,” details Durant. “You want to make sure the guys recover and get as much rest as possible. It’s a long flight across the country to Montreal.”
Last week, Darian Durant announced Chris Getzlaf as his first guest for his fundraiser dinner, “Dinner with Doubles.” This week, he announced a new guest: his former teammate Wes Cates.
Dinner with Doubles will be held on August 31st, and all proceeds will go to the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation in honour of Jim Hopson.
