Sunshine and Small Town Baseball

Throughout Saskatchewan’s history, sports has played an important role for its people. From small town fairs to big city events, sports are a central part of the fun, especially in rural Saskatchewan. Some of the finest, most competitive baseball players came from small towns over the years which can be read and seen in the countless stories in the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and in the Rural Sports Hall of Fame in Indian Head.

Years ago, many small towns and country schools/churches would host local sports days in the summer to bring families together for a weekend of fun. Most of these sports days included massive baseball tournaments involving teams from neighbouring communities, often renewing serious rivalries. Today, there are very few places that continue to hold sports days and, often, the only reminders are the old baseball backstops that still stand up to the prairie winds.

While sports days may be disappearing, thankfully baseball is still alive and well in our small towns. Windthorst and Kipling, 90 minutes southeast of Regina, will be home to the 2024 Senior AA Tier 3 Provincials Six Team Championship in August. Participating teams include the Assiniboia Aces, Cabri River Rats, Findlater Braves, Wilkie Brewers, North East Red Sox, and hosts Windthorst Pirates.

The tournament runs August 9th to 11th with the first game starting at noon on August 9th between the Findlater Braves and Assiniboia Aces. A home run derby and a pancake breakfast will also be part of the baseball weekend.
