Looks like Ma’ Nature will be very cooperative this weekend for the inaugural Saskatchewan Open Farm Days, which celebrates all things agriculture in Saskatchewan, while educating people at the same time.
“On our list it’s quite a wide range. We have alpacas, bees, cattle, dairy, egg production, field crops, greenhouses, orchards, breweries, sheep and goats, wineries, distilleries – it’s really everything,” explained organizer Ashley Stone of Farm, Food, and Care.
The event takes place on various farms and ranches across the province including Treasure Valley Markets near Cadillac, Prairie Bee Meadery near Caron, Seven Meadows Farm at Regina Beach, and HI Horse Adventures at Mankota. Travelers can also tour the 1927 Val Marie elevator this weekend as part Open Farm Days. It’s open from 9am to 5pm each day and will include a farmer’s market, plus Saskatchewan singer/songwriter Jeffery Straker will be performing at the elevator Sunday 2pm.
“It’s pretty impressive to be able to showcase the diversity of our agriculture sector,” Stone said.
There are two ways people can participate in Open Farm Days. There’s a self driving option with the help of the Open Farms website.
“If you go on to our website, under ‘visit a farm,’ you can check out all the different farms that are participating, create your own itinerary, and figure out where you want to go,” stated Stone.
The other option involves a bus tour on Saturday. Those wishing to have a more relaxed tour can purchase tickets for $50/person and be transported to five different farms. Tour buses will be leaving both Regina and Saskatoon. For those who are taking pictures for social media, you’re encouraged to use the hashtag #SKOpenFarmDays.
