Former Rider Coach Ken Miller has Died at 82

One of the most beloved coaches in the long history of the Saskatchewan Roughriders has died.

Ken Miller died Wednesday in Asheville, North Carolina, and had been battling cancer. He was 82.

The team announced his passing on social media.

Miller was part of some tremendous seasons in Saskatchewan, including the Grey Cup Championship in 2007. Miller led the club to consecutive Grey Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010.

Miller was first brought in as an offensive coordinator under Head Coach Kent Austin in 2007. Austin left the following season for a coaching job in the US.

Probably the most notorious memory is the infamous “13th Man” game, when the Riders had too many men on the field when Montreal missed a game winning field goal in the 2009 Grey Cup. The penalty gave Montreal a chance, and moments later the Alouettes were hoisting the Grey Cup.

Miller stepped down as coach after the 2010 season, but stayed on as Director of Football Operations. He was back on the sidelines for most of the 2011 season, after coach Greg Marshall was fired after a 1 and 7 start.

Miller was known for his calm demeanor and genuine kindness. He could make anyone feel like they had known him for years.

Funeral Arrangements have not been announced.
