Latest projections expect more production and average yields, but less harvested acres

Statistics Canada released model-based projections of production of various crops for each province on Wednesday morning.

In Saskatchewan, they expect more canola, durum, lentils, oats, dry peas, and flaxseed to be produced, but less spring wheat, barley, and mustard seed. Production for canola is anticipated to be 10.6 million tonnes this year; spring wheat 11 million tonnes; durum 4.8 million tonnes; lentils 2.4 million tonnes; oats 1.3 million tonnes; barley 2.7 million tonnes; dry peas 1.6 million tonnes, flaxseed 247,802 tonnes; mustard seed 122,070 tonnes; and canary seed 155,525 tonnes in 2024.

Stats Canada is also expecting a decrease in harvested area for most crops. Canola’s harvested area is expected to be 12 million acres; spring wheat 8.8 million; barley 2.1 million acres; flaxseed 401, 800 acres; and mustard seed 395,600 acres. The only increases to the harvested area are oats of 1.1 million acres; canary seed 274 thousand acres; and lentils 3.6 million acres.

Average yields are expected to go up for eight crops – canola, durum lentils, barley, dry peas, flaxseed, mustard seed, and canary seed. StatsCan projects yields for canola to be 39 bushels per acre this year; durum to be 35.3 bushels per acre, up from last year’s value of 24.9 bushels per acre; lentils 1,445 pounds per acre; barley to 58.8 bushels per acre; dry peas 34.8 bushels per acre, rising from the 2023 yield of 29.8 bushels per acre; flaxseed 24.3 bushels per acre, mustard seed 680 pounds per acre; and canary seed 1,251 pounds per acre.

Stats Canada’s report on stocks of principal field crops at July 31, 2024 will be released on September 9.
