August has ended and rolled into September which brings a busy U Sports schedule for the University of Regina. In the first week of September, there was a noteworthy match-up.
Football: Rams vs. Huskies
The U Prairie Challenge — football edition — started in the second week of the Canada West football season with the first provincial battle taking place on the turf at Mosaic Stadium in the Queen City.
The Rams led 22-7 in the second quarter but the Huskies rallied and made it another exciting contest between two provincial universities. In the end, the Rams prevailed with a 33-28 victory. Regina improved to 2-0 while the Huskies fall to 0-2.
There were some noteworthy numbers in this one. Noah Pelletier won the quarterback matchup completing 26-of-31 passes for 359 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. While Anton Amundrud connected on 22-of-33 passes for 235 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Two receivers had standout performances for the Rams, D’Sean Mimbs had nine receptions for 135 yards and Renzel Arinaza caught seven balls for 91 yards.
Our last notable performance shout out goes to the Rams defensive line playing like beasts. Tarick Polius was hard on the Huskies offensive line all night and finished with four solo tackles, three assisted tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one pass knockdown.
Regina’s next game is Saturday, September 14 at 2 p.m. when the Rams host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at Mosaic Stadium. Catch all the action on 620 CKRM.
Women’s soccer: Cougars vs. Pandas and Griffins
In their first two games to kick off the 2024 Canada West schedule, the Cougars were at home on Saturday and played host to the University of Alberta Pandas. Thanks to goals from Peyton Enns and Emma Davidson the Cougars sent the fans home happy with a 2-1 victory.
The next day the Cougars were right back on the pitch to play host to the Grant MacEwan Griffins. The Cougars were shutout in the second game of the weekend 3-0. Hannah Harper led the way for the visitors with one goal and an assist. The Cougars did however outshoot the Griffins 13-12.
The next two games for the Cougars women’s soccer team are also at home. Saturday, September 14 Regina hosts the University of Manitoba Bisons and the following Sunday the Winnipeg Wesmen. Both games start at 12 p.m. and will be played at the University of Regina field.
Exhibition women’s hockey: Cougars vs. Huskies
It’s the first week of September and yes, hockey pre-season games are already being played. This one at a neutral site as the universities expose smaller communities to U Sports. The Cougars took on their provincial rivals the Huskies in Swift Current and won 1-0.
The women’s team has three more exhibition games scheduled, September 20, 21 and 22 at the Co-operators Centre prior to kicking off their season at home against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, October 4.
