Former Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive lineman Ben Fairbrother died in a motorcycle accident at 51 years old on Friday, September 13 in Edmonton.
The Riders selected Fairbrother with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1997 CFL Draft. The University of Calgary graduate played 58 games over four seasons in Saskatchewan with 20 starts along the offensive line.
“The Saskatchewan Roughriders are deeply saddened by the passing of Ben Fairbrother, a valued member of the club from 1997 to 2000,” the franchise said in a statement.
“Ben was a standout on the football field, but an even greater presence to his family, especially his daughters, Ella and Georgia. Our heartfelt condolences go out to them, as well as to his wife, Tanya, and their loved ones.”
Fairbrother was the offensive line coach for the Edmonton Wildcats in the Canadian Junior Football League.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing, leaving a deep void in our organization and in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Ben joined the Wildcats four years ago and quickly became an integral part of our team. His dedication, expertise, and kindness touched everyone who worked with him. He was not just a valued colleague but a mentor to our players,” the team said in a statement.
“Ben’s contributions to the Wildcats were invaluable, and his legacy will be felt for years to come. Our thoughts and support are with his family at this most difficult time.”
