Cattle prices up, more marketed in latest Cattle Market Update

Prices for Saskatchewan Feeder Steers and Heifers were up in the latest Cattle Market Update for the week ending September 27th.

Steer prices were available in every category except for the 300-400 pound category. Those prices ranged from $306.88 per hundred weight in the 900-plus category to $455.19 in the 400-500 pound category. The largest week-over-week increase was in the 600-700 pound category by $9.29 to an average price of $379.25 per hundred weight.

Heifer prices were available in most categories expect for the 300-400 pound category. They ranged from $305.69 in the 800-plus category up to $393.00 in the 400-500 pound category. The 700-800 pound heifers had the biggest increase week-over-week of $7.92 to average $324.85 per hundred weight.

There was a noticeable increase to the number of cattle marketed in the province last week compared to the prior week. Canfax reported 12-thousand 582 feeder cattle marketed, well above the 3-thousand 264 marketed the previous week, but below the 15-thousand 16 head marketed the same week last year. The year-to-date total of cattle sold at auction is 243-thousand 689, down 23 per cent from last year.

Canfax says the price of live, non-fed cattle in Alberta reported on September 27 were lower than the previous week. The price of D2 slaughter cows averaged $181.17 per cwt, a decrease of $3.36 from the previous week. The price of D3 slaughter cows decreased $2.34 per cwt from the prior week to average $168.86 per cwt.

The Canfax price for Alberta fed steers for the week ending September 27 was $241.75 per cwt; a decrease of $1.96 per cwt from the previous week.
