Walking Like a Penguin Can Keep You From Falling on Ice

According to the Mayo Clinic, roughly 800,000 people a year need medical attention after a slip or fall.  And in these winter months, with icy conditions, it can be especially dangerous. I concur, as I have broken both of my legs from slipping.

Did you know that the best way to walk on ice, is to walk like a PENGUIN?  Changing your stride on ice can really make the difference, and help keep you from falling.

Here’s how to do the penguin walk:

1.  Keep your knees relaxed, in an active position, so you’re ready to react.

2.  Point your feet slightly outward.  Get in your waddle stance.

3.  Walk slowly while SHUFFLING your feet.  Small shuffle steps are best.

4.  Keep your center of gravity over your feet.  So you might even be leaning forward a little bit.

The reason these small, shuffling steps work is because of friction and gravity.  The larger your steps, the more force, which increases the likelihood of a fall.
