A look at trends from 2024 Crop Prices

Crop prices varied dramatically throughout 2024.

The agriculture portion of the Saskatchewan government website has graphs of farm gate grain prices over time. Note that prices vary from one location to another each day and also vary geographically depending upon access to processing facilities. However, the graphs show the relative ups and downs.

Canola hit its highest price in late May at $14.15 a bushel and hit a low of $11.50 a bushel at the end of November. Canola improved after that closing the year just under $13 a bushel.

Spring wheat at the end of May was the high for the year of $9.39 a bushel. It’s lowest was the end of August at $6.60. Spring wheat closed the year at $7.65.

The highest durum price of 2024 was last January at over $12 a bushel. The lowest was early September at $7.90. Durum closed the year at about $8.65 a bushel.

Feed barley started 2024 at around $5.40 a bushel, hitting a low of $4.20 at the end of August, improving after that to close the year at a bit over $5.00. Feed barley prices improve as you get closer to Alberta’s feedlot alley.

Red lentils were as high as 36 cents a pound in 2024 and closed the year around 32 cents. Large green lentils were as high as 81 cents a pound in mid-May, dropped to around 48 cents in mid-August and ended the year at 59 cents.

Oats trended downwards for the entire year, starting at $4.45 a bushel and ending at just over $3.53.

Yellow peas hit $13 a bushel in mid-May, dropped to $9 in August and ended the year at $10 a bushel.

Watch for Saskatchewan Agriculture’s 2025 Crop Planning Guide to be released over the next couple weeks. It usually comes out during the Crop Production Show.
