World’s most powerful passports

Canadians love to travel and usually the winter is one of the most popular times of the year to go on a vacation to escape the cold for a week or two. In order to travel anywhere, Canadians must have a passport. While it can be long and frustrating to apply or renew a passport, the fact remains that it is a vitally important document.

Every year a group called Henley and Partners rank the most powerful passports from various countries. The list is based on the number of destinations one can go. In other words, places where the passport will get you in without a prior Visa.

Canada has the 7th most powerful passport in the world which means Canadians can travel to 188 different countries out of 227 destinations without any entry concerns. This position marks a move up on the global list from 2023 where Canada placed 8th. Poland and Malta also share the 7th spot on the list while our neighbours in the United States came in 9th on the list, tied with Estonia at 186 destinations.

The country with the most powerful passport in the world happens to be one of the smallest countries, Singapore. Residents of Singapore can travel to 195 countries. The country with the weakest passport belonged to Afghanistan where residents could only travel to 26 different destinations.

Other countries on the top 10 list include Japan at 2 while Italy, Spain, and South Korea came in 3rd. Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden were tied for 4th. New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, and the UK all came in 5th. Greece and Australia came in 6th while Czechia and Hungary came in 8th. Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, and the United Arab Emirates round out the top 10.
