CFL unveils 2025 schedule: Saskatchewan Roughriders host season kick-off

The Canadian Football League has released their much-anticipated 2025 schedule.

The season opens in Saskatchewan with the Roughriders home to the Ottawa Redblacks on Thursday, June 5. It concludes with the 112th Grey Cup game on Sunday, November 16 in Winnipeg. Commissioner Randy Ambrosie is excited about the new campaign.

“Each offseason brings a wealth of intrigue – new leadership, game-changing acquisitions and much more. However, the previous season finished, and June 5 represents the start of something new – a clean slate filled with tantalizing possibilities and the chance for dreams to come true,” he said in a statement.

One of the focuses for the 2025 schedule was competitive balance. No teams have a four-day turnaround, no more than two five-day turnarounds and no team will have more than three instances playing an opponent coming off a bye week.

Additionally, games in 2025 will be played earlier in the day. Twenty-three games will kick off at 4 p.m. or earlier — a 44 percent increase compared to 2024 — providing families and kids more opportunities to come together at the stadium to cheer on their favourite teams.

The Labour Day Classics remain intact for the 2025 season, but there will be a new addition. On July 4, the Calgary Stampeders will host Winnipeg in the first-ever Stampede Bowl, a game that will coincide with the opening of the Calgary Stampede.

Looking closer at the Saskatchewan Roughriders game breakdown, the home schedule includes just one Thursday night game — the CFL season opener on June 5 and one Sunday game – the iconic Labour Day Classic. This year’s home games are rounded out with three Friday games and four Saturday games. This season also boasts five family-friendly start times, which include four 5 p.m. starts in Weeks 4, 13, 15 and 21 and one 1 p.m. start in Week 11.

Much like last season, the Roughriders play every team in the West and East Division at least twice, once home and once away. The Green and White also play two divisional rivals, the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, three times or five times against Winnipeg if you count the preseason. The team is also thrilled to celebrate the 60th Labour Day Classic on August 31.

As a bonus, the 2025 schedule also keeps the Roughriders players well rested, with no game-to-game turnarounds shorter than six days and evenly spaced byes in Weeks 5, 10 and 16.
