The annual World Happiness Report has been released and it has painted an unflattering picture of satisfaction in our country. For many years, Canada has always ranked in the top ten happiest countries out of 140 nations, however the past year has shown satisfaction is down.
The report is a partnership of the United Nations, Gallup Polls, and the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre. Researchers interviewed residents in 140 countries around the world about the level of satisfaction and happiness they have in their life. Researchers focus on areas such as social security, GDP per capita, freedoms, corruption, and life expectancy. In 2024 Canada placed 15th on the list and 13th on the list in 2023, but the country has dropped to its lowest level at #18 on the list. The United States also dropped to their lowest level on the list since it started at #24.
A number of factors were cited as the reasons for dissatisfaction including frustrations with others over a lack of kindness and respect.
The top five happiest countries this year are:
- Finland
- Denmark
- Iceland
- Sweden
- Netherlands
While Finland was named the happiest country for an eighth straight time, Afghanistan has been named the least happiest country in the world.
