Curtain Razor theatre brings you back to 1963 with the production TOMMY and PÈRE, a play written by Arthur Milner. The playwright was born in Frankfurt, West Germany. As a child he migrated from Poland to Canada with his parents and settled in Montreal in 1951. Milner was part of Ottawa’s Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) as resident playwright and artistic director. His move to Saskatchewan was about 5 years ago.
Arthur Milner has whole heartedly taken on creating what a private meeting between two prairie icons Athol “Pere” Murray and Tommy Douglas might have been like in the 1960’s. Tommy Douglas and Pere Murray come to life as they square off in discussions at a time the Doctor’s Strike was taking place in the summer of 1962. Murray, opposing socialized medicine and inciting violence at anti-Medicare rallies on radio broadcasts. With the assistance of the Saskatchewan Archives, the audience will be immersed in the installation portion of the play before moving into the production and then there is the post-show conversation. The duration of the show is 2 hours.
