SASKATCHEWAN – Saskatchewan RCMP advises the public that winter weather is impacting road conditions throughout Saskatchewan. Snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 20 cm is expected.
A wintery mix of precipitation continues Thursday night and into Friday across much of southern Saskatchewan. Heavy, rapidly accumulating, snowfall continues along the Yellowhead corridor late Thursday afternoon. 10 to 20 cm of snow is forecast across the province before the snow eases Friday evening.
In addition to snowfall, strong easterly winds will create reduced visibilities and poor highway travel conditions. A risk of freezing rain is also possible south of this band of heaviest snow Thursday night as additional moisture and warm air pushes up from Montana.
This band will move eastwards through the night, moving into southwestern Manitoba during the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
Before travelling, check the weather and road conditions along your route. If poor weather or road conditions exist or are forecast, consider delaying travel if possible. If travel is necessary, stay on roads that have recently received road maintenance. Travellers can access information on road conditions and track which roads have been plowed, salted, and/or sanded within the last two hours at hotline.gov.sk.ca/map (English only).
Saskatchewan RCMP reminds the public to avoid calling 911 or local RCMP detachments for updates on road conditions. Calling 911 must be reserved for emergencies and crimes in progress, and using it in non-emergent situations could prevent someone with a life-threatening emergency from getting help.
