The City of Regina is is encouraging residents to adopt a street drain once again to help keep the water flowing. The annual adopt a grate program allows residents to name the grate closest to them while ensuring it’s clear of leaves and other debris.
According to the City of Regina there are 22,000 storm drains that need to be adopted by residents allowing water to flow freely and preventing any street flooding. Several drains have been adopted already and have been given very creative names including Grate Scott, Drain Gretzky – The Grate One, Thirsty, Draining Men, Wet Willy, and Drain The Rock Johnson.
The City of Regina reminds residents to only use a rake or shovel to clear away any debris and not to use hands. Hazardous items like broken glass, needles, or dead animals should not be handled and residents should report them to Service Regina for removal. Those who adopt a drain are also reminded not to remove the grate and if it’s broken to report the issue to the City.
Leaves and other debris should be placed in the green carts for disposal and not left on the street or near the drain where it could clog the grate again causing street flooding.
