The historic Grand Theatre in Indian Head is seeking the support of Saskatchewanians as they attempt to win up to $50,000 as part of a national contest.
“The Grand Theatre was originally built in 1904 and is believed to be the oldest continuously operating theatre of its kind in western Canada and it’s really been a hub of entertainment in Indian head for the past 121 years,” explained Jenn Graff-Litzenberger of the Grand Theatre.
The theatre is the only building in Saskatchewan that’s currently in the Next Great Save contest, a competition that aims to help communities and organizations restore historically important buildings and sites across Canada. The Grand Theatre is one of 12 places across the country seeking to win the grand prize courtesy of Ecclesiastical Insurance.
Recently the theatre has been the recipient of a grant from the federal and provincial governments, but the organization is required to match one-third of that grant to reach the full funding.
“We were searching what other ways can we fundraise and were Googling everything we possibly could for contests, grants, and things like that, and this was one that came up,” noted Graff-Litzenberger.
Should the Grand Theatre win the competition, they plan to use the money to make the building more accessible for visitors and to renovate their bathrooms.
