The Government of Saskatchewan says most of its purchasing supports local businesses and workers.
Over the past five years, nearly 90 per cent of contracts went to Saskatchewan companies. When local companies apply, that number goes up to 95 per cent. More than 99 per cent of all contracts went to Canadian companies, with less than one per cent going to U.S. firms.
SaskBuilds Minister David Marit said in a news release that the province will always put Saskatchewan people and businesses first. The Ministry of Highways reported that in 2024–25, more than 96 per cent of the value of construction contracts went to local companies.
Crown Corporations also showed strong support. In the first three quarters of 2024–25, about 75 per cent of their contracts went to Saskatchewan suppliers. SaskPower is also buying 10,000 tons of steel from EVRAZ in the coming months.
Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan will not buy any new VLTs or slot machines from the U.S. Instead, 720 new VLTs are being ordered from a Canadian-owned company.
SaskBuilds says it will continue to follow a fair and open process to make sure taxpayers get the best value.
