Trudeau pledges $850m to help end COVID-19 pandemic

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is collaborating with other countries to work on ways to end the pandemic.

Speaking at Monday morning’s COVID-19 update, Trudeau says Canada is providing $850 million to the effort.

“The more we co-operate, the more likely we find a cure and find it quickly. That’s something we all want to see,” explained the prime minister.

Trudeau took part in a leaders video conference undertaken by the European Union in co-operation with a number of G20 countries, seeking to raise funds for research and development related to COVID-19 testing, treatment, and prevention.

Trudeau says a safe return for workers at a Cargill meat packing plant in High River, Alberta is a priority.

He was asked what the federal government can do to inspect those plants to ensure the utmost safety.

“We’re working with provinces across the country to ensure that the supply chain for agriculture continues,” said Trudeau.

“Worker safety needs to be upheld. That is a provincial area of responsibility, but the federal government has a role to play as well.”

One worker at the plant died and dozens of others were infected by the virus.
