Early harvested Sask. wheat shows high grade

Early results of harvest grain samples show some high quality wheat is in the bin.

As of mid-October, the Canadian Grain Commission says about 31 percent of the 800 Saskatchewan wheat samples were in the top grade, 42 percent number 2 and the remaining 27 percent evenly split between number 3 and feed.

Grain Commission inspection manager Daryl Beswitherick these numbers will likely change as more producers submit samples from later harvested crops.

The early durum samples show 25 percent is number one, 22 percent number two, 31 percent number three, and the remaining 22 percent of the durum samples evenly split between number four and five.

He released no numbers from other crops but says quality is lower.

Beswitherick says lentil samples show some sprouting but canola seems to be holding up well against the weather.
