Thunder in wait-and-see mode on 2020 PFC season

Like many other leagues, the Prairie Football Conference is hoping they can get a year in, but preparing for what happens if they can’t.

Regina Thunder Head Coach Scott MacAulay says a lot of scenarios are being talked about.

“There are a lot of things on the table,” McAulay said. “Do we separate into an Alberta conference and a Saskatchewan/Manitoba conference for one year and play teams within our conference until the final?  When do we start the season and how late can we go when it comes to starting a season? Those are just some of the questions that are being asked.”

Like it is for many, the problem is revenue. The Thunder’s yearly budget is about $300,000, and with many businesses in a state of flux, it is hard to say how much of a financial hit the team will take.

One of its main benefactors are the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but with the prospects of no CFL season happening, McAulay realizes money that would normally come might not do so this year.

“A lot of our sponsors are suffering and when they normally are donating money to others like women’s shelters and the food banks, they have a decision to make when it comes to priorities and giving back to the community.” McAulay said. “We are just trying to work with everyone and show some empathy as we understand how serious this is.  One of our big sponsors are the Riders, but you know what situation they are in right now and we certainly won’t be getting any revenue from the 50-50’s so it’s a concern that our board of governors are trying to address.”

The PFC season normally gets underway in mid-August.
