Craven’s own Karly Rumpel attending Youth Ag Summit in Brazil

While the Youth Ag Summit is taking place in Brazil this year, it will feature a Saskatchewan connection.

Karly Rumpel, who has a family farm just north of Craven, will be attending the event along with four other Canadians, all of who are from Alberta. There are 100 delegates chosen for the event from around the world.

Rumpel said the focus of the summit is to try and solve world hunger.

“They got us to apply with an idea that we came up with, no matter how big or small, that could help solve hunger, and from there that’s how they selected us.”

Rumpel said she was very excited when she found out she was going.

“These people that I am going to the summit with are absolutely brilliant,” Rumpel said. “We’ve became a pretty tight-knit group already via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, very few of us have met before, and there’s just this kinship, and it’s pretty amazing.”

She said she’s hoping to learn a lot from experience.

“I’m going in knowing what an agronomist knows and not what these business people, entrepreneurs and agriculture scientists that work in greenhouses and with cassavas know,” Rumpel said. “I think education is extremely important, and the only way we’re going to gain actual education is by going out there.”

The Youth Ag Summit runs from Monday to Wednesday next week.
