CFL training camps were to get underway today, but that will not be happening because of COVID-19.
The league is hoping to get some kind of season in and they are hoping to get some federal aid as well, but whether or not they get one or both is not known at this time.
Riders punter and Regina native Jon Ryan says it is a very unsettling time for players.
“Everything’s just so up in the air, and we’re kind of waiting to see what the government says, waiting to see what happens to how this virus progresses,” said Ryan. “It doesn’t appear to be real good right now, things don’t seem to be real positive.”
Ryan says he can’t imagine a summer at Mosaic Stadium with no football but the reality is that might be the case.
‘I can’t even warp my mind around it right now, the summers in Saskatchewan really revolve around the Saskatchewan Roughriders,” said Ryan. “Good summers, we win, bad summers, we lose, it’s just the way it goes. It’s hard to think of a beautiful Friday night in June or July not watching a game at Mosaic Stadium.”
Ryan also feels CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie delivered a slap to the face of the players when it comes to the 150 million dollar aid request he has made to the federal government. He says it was ridiculous not to have any player involvement.
